The governor answered and said unto them,
Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.
Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called
Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. And the governor
said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying,
Let him be crucified. Then released he Barabbas unto them; and when
he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified (Matthew 27:
21-23 & 26).
Pilate knew exactly that Jesus was innocent and wanted Him and not Barabbas
to be released. As a result of being manipulated by their authorities,
the people desired Barabbas to be freed. Barabbas was a murderer, whereas,
Jesus had done nothing wrong; yet nonetheless, they cried out, Away
with this man, and release unto us Barabbas (Luke 23:18)!
Now the choice had been made - the majority of the people and their
leaders preferred to have Barabbas, a murderer, rather than Jesus. Not
much has changed today since the time of that event. The majority of
our nation is also crying out, Away with Jesus, away with the Word of
God, away with the truth, away with conscience, give us Barabbas, let
the murderer live. Ungodliness brings about the downfall of a nation
- as history reveals. All sectors of society are affected, ranging from
the family down to the children. Every second marriage ends in divorce.
Unwanted children are killed in the womb. By the way, everything is
legal. As a consequence, you can wash your hands like Pilate did - this
is the spirit of Barabbas! Nobody asks God what He thinks about it all.
Corruption and deceit are found almost everywhere, misuse of money entrusted
to those in power is part of the daily agenda. Children who just want
to buy chewing gum at the kiosk are confronted with provocative pictures
of naked women. At school our children are laughed at by the teachers
because they believe in God.
Looking at the headlines reveals that several churches in this country
have also called for Barabbas and not for Jesus. In this case, the salt
has lost its flavour. It is necessary to show patriotism to your country,
however, the days when the country was governed by god-fearing men is
a thing of the past. People went to give their vote, Barabbas was chosen
and Jesus was crucified! Who have you voted for? (rw)
